“Music is good for young brains,” “Play music for your kids,” “Music leads to better grades.”
We hear these things all the time from parent-help books and blogs, and while they are all true, they start to fall on deaf ears after the 100th time we hear them.
So let’s take a reimagined look at how music actually impacts the brain.
IQ points are a mathematical value that researchers have decided to assign to various levels of memory, logical reasoning, learned knowledge, and how fast you can think and process information. This is how we measure an individual’s intelligence over a span of time, or compare the intelligence of two different people. Average intelligence is said to be a nice, even, satisfying 100 point. Anything above or below 100 puts you above or below average intelligence.
Makes sense right?
But how much control do we actually have over our IQ score? The answer might be surprising.
There are several ways to increase your IQ score, such as playing memory games, learning a new language, reading books, or even practicing visuospatial activities (like imagining a 3D cube in your brain).
The number one way to increase your IQ score, however, is something easy and fun: Learning to play a musical instrument.
Learning to make music increases IQ score by an average of 7 whole points.
This happens because when you play music, you are using the part of your brain that holds your memory, your logical reasonings, and requires your brain to process large amounts of information in a short amount of time.
AND all of these benefits are attainable no matter how old you are. That means that it is never too late to learn and instrument and receive all of the amazing benefits that it offers.
PLUS you will receive these benefits, no matter how talented of a musician you become! A beginner will receive just as many benefits as a seasoning pro.
Learning a cool new skill, and becoming smarter?
Sounds like a win/win situation to me!
